Other information:

One of the most beautiful monuments of the centre of Sopron is the Baroque Esterházy Palace, where a Central Mining Museum can be found. The museum is the national professional centre presenting the history of 1000-year-old Hungarian mining. The permanent exhibition opened in 2000 presents the most important mining relics of the Carpathian-basin from pre-historic times to the present in seven thematic blocks, with information given in 4 languages - English, German, Slovakian and Hungarian. Visitors can enjoy the magical exhibition of minerals and stones as well as the art relics of Hungarian ore mining, famous in Europe for centuries, and interiors and articles illustrating the most typical stages of the history of mining of several thousand years. On the ground floor the exhibitions present reconstructed mines of original size, and small-scale working models of mining machines.
