The Thury Castle in the town centre of Várpalota houses the Museum of the History of Mining. The institution is a branch of the Central Museum of Mining (Sopron, Templom u. 2.) The exhibition was opened to the public in 1976 on the 100th anniversary of coal mining in Várpalota. The collection presents the history of local mining showing the exhausting work of the miners. The exhibition, which includes mineral and rock samples introducing the geological environment of the coal in Várpalota, the mock-up machines of modern mining, the measuring instruments of mining, the devices used in rescues, the relics of sports and cultural life, the works of art related with mining, offers an interesting and informative walk to the visitors. With the entrance ticket you can also visit the Museum of Hungarian Chemistry.
