The village of 1,050 inhabitants was built in the west of the old county Nógrád, in the Nógrád-basin, along the brook Derék. It borders on Dejtár and Érsekvadkert in the east, on Horpács - in the south, on Nagyoroszi - in the west and on Ipolyvece - in the north.
It was first mentioned in records in 1255, after the Mongol invasion, in the period of King Béla IV. According to the documents it was named after its brook and it belonged to the archbishopric of Esztergom.
Famous sights include the three-hole stone bridge built in 1800, which is 22 m long and 5 m wide and the Baroque St. John chapel from 1860.
