Town with 8,000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Sajó, at the Slovakian border.

The fortress of Putnok was important in Turkish times. Of the stones of the fortress the former Serényi mansion was built then reconstructed in Classicist style in 1860. Buildings of significance in the town: the mansion built by count Béla Serényi, the educational institutions, the Town Hall, the Museum of Gömör and the Gallery of László Holló.
József Péczely, Calvinist pastor, wirter and translator of literary works was born in the town, Ede Tóth, the writer, the author of the play 'The scamp of the village' was also born here.

In recent years it has started to regain its role as the centre of this small region.
