The Ballet Company of Győr, founded by the graduates of the Hungarian Ballet Institute in 1979, took up its career in the new building of the Győr Theatre under the leadership of Iván Markó. The Ballet Company of Győr has soon become popular both in the town and the region. Having conquered the Hungarian audience their playes have been crowned with international success within a short period of time. In addition to the two premiéres in each theatre-season in Győr, the company has performed world premiéres several times in Budapest, Vienna, Athens and Paris. They had performances at the Scala of Milan, at Bayreuth Festival Games and at the Olympic Games in Seoul. They went on tours to Austria, Germany, Japan, Italy, England, China, India, Russia and to the United States. They have danced on stages of several Bohemian, Romanian, Slovakian, Danish and Israeli theatres. In 1983 at World Theatre Festival in Baltimore from 27 productions the one of the Győr Ballet was awarded the Critics' Prize. After the resignation of the previous director in 1991 János Kiss, one of the establishing members, became the leader of the company. Under his direction a new era has started in the history of the Ballet Company of Győr : they continued to follow traditional dance theatrical elements and to meet the high artistic and professional requirements but with more various themes and styles, a broadened number of artists, world-famous choreographers and designers. The company has two premiéres in Győr Theatre a year, which are choreographed by well-known choreographers both from abroad - Robert North, Libor Vaculik, Marie Brolin Tani, Günter Pick, Robert Cohan, Alexander Schneider-Rossmy - and by the own choreographers of the Győr Ballet - William Fomin, Barbara Bombicz and Ottó Demcsák. Since 1995 the company goes on international tours for 3-5 weeks every year, mainly to Germany and Austria, but they had very successful performances in Rome, Thessaloniki, and in the cities of the Netherlands and France. In 2002 the production 'Purim or the Sortilege' brought down the house at Joyce Theatre in New York 8 times, in 2003 in London at the Queen Elisabeth Hall. This tour continued in Kuopio, Helsinki, Malmö and in 2005. Moscow. The Ballet Company of Győr performs in many Hungarian cultural festivals (Buadepst Spring Festival, Jewish Summer Festival, Szabadtéri Játékok Szeged, Operafestival Miskolc, Keszthely Dance Panorama) The Company celebrated its 25th Anniversary in November 2004. In the next season the choreography of William Fomin, titled Giovanni could be seen by the audience. The following remarkable performance was Hamlet, based on the choreography of the Sweden Marie Brolin-Tani. Thank to the Hungarian Dance Festival, organised in every 2 year, in June 2006 Győr could become the capital city of dance for the 5th time. In 2007, considered as the development of the Festival, the First Dance Biennale was also organised with a traditionalist purpose. In the year 2008 dance is going to be celebrated in Győr from 20 to 26 June. The Company's newest production is Keep Smiling - Hommage a Chaplin, the ballet of Ben van Cauwenbergh and Dmitrij Simkin, which due to the unique scene derived from video-design technique immediately became not only a favourite with the audience, but it also aroused several foreign impressionist's interest. The Győr Ballet employs 34 dancers, and own technical and management staff.
