The 4,5 km long large village, which is situated south of Eger, is practically built together with the county seat. It was created by uniting Andornak and Kistálya in 1939. Formerly the core area of both settlements was the cave dwellings and cellars of the rhyolite tuff hills stretching on the eastern side. The single nave church of Our lady on the hill of Kistálya is accessible on steps. The late baroque building was built between 1767 and 1779 probably according to the plans by Jakab Fellner, or according to other experts – by Antal Riendl. The headboard in the park in front of the church commemorates the important events of our history. The neoclassical Mocsáry mansion is situated in the Andornak part of the settlement. It was built by the Mocsáry family between 1836 and 1838. The facade of the building is decorated by reliefs of Marco Casagrande, a sculptor from Venice. The best-known owner of the mansion was Lajos Mocsáry known as the ”hermit of Andornak”. He was the subprefect of county Borsod, an MP between 1861 and 1892. As one of the leaders of the Independence Party, he represented the principles of the revolution of 1848, but he was gradually isolated because of his ideas on nationality issues and finally was forced to leave the party. Being disappointed he retired from his political career into his estate in 1892. On the western side of the road you can admire the neoclassical gloriette, the ornament of the former park. |
