It is situated in the south-eastern part of county Csongrád, on the right bank of the river Tisza. Its importance was determined by the river nearby, and by the fact that it is 10 km from Szeged, the town of county rank, and 15 km from Hódmezővásárhely. Its territory is crossed by the national motorway No. 47 and the railway line between Szeged and Békéscsaba. To go across the river Tisza there is a road and a railway bridge here. The whole territory of Algyő is an organic part of the ridge between the Danube and the Tisza, its geodesically highest point is the building of the railway station, which is 72,5 m higher than the level of the Adriatic sea. Based on the records mentioning the village, it celebrated the 860th anniversary of its foundation in 1998. It was probably inhabited as early as the period of the Hungarian conquest, its landowners were the members of the leading tribe. At the beginning of the 20th century it had developed agriculture and important small-scale industries. It became important in the national economy due to the natural gas and oil explored here in the 60s. By right of unification Algyő was attached to Szeged in 1973. This forced dependency influenced all the aspects of life in the village. As a result of the official referendum held on 27 October 1996, the unification was cancelled by common wish. The budget allocated for Algyő in 1997 ensured the establishment of an independent local council in the village.
Sights of the town: you can still see St. Ann's Church - except for the Baroque spire - from the Middle ages. The western side is broken by a flat arched door with a simple brick framework, the two southern corners are supported by a three-section diagonal buttress each. The ground floor of the tower serves as a porch covered by a simple barrel vault. In the two sides of the porch you can see two sediles built in the wall. The time of the building work can be determined roughly: it was probably built in the period between the 14th and the end of the 15th century. On the wall of the church you can see a memorial plaque with the names of the victims of the two World Wars. In the village you can find the András Süli House presenting the works by one of the most famous peasant painters, András Süli, who was born at the end of the 19st century. A street was named after him in Algyő and a memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the house. He was awarded the title of the First Honorary Citizen of Algyő. The local council of the village had his mortal remains brought home and on 1 October 2000 he was buried in a honorary grave in his home country. In front of the Health Centre you can see a beautiful three-figure statue called "Care" by Sándor Kligl. The monument of the heroes of the war was erected near the entrance of the cemetery of Algyő in 1999, on the day of Algyő.
