The village of 410 inhabitants is situated in the north-west of the Gerecse hills. It is accessible on M1 highway or from Tata going on road No. 100. It was first mentioned in records in the Middle Ages, in 1382. The village was named after the church dedicated to St. Nicholas, while 'Duna' was attached to the name in 1913. József Esterházy brought German settlers here in 1733. Since 1990 the village has had its own local council. In 1994 the Local Council for the German Minority was established. The local community centre and the library provide cultural programmes, and the village has sports facilities, too. The one-street layout created by the German settlers is still preserved in Dunaszentmiklós. |
