The village of 624 inhabitants is situated on the right bank of the forth largest bend of the Mosoni-Danube, halfway between Mosonmagyaróvár and Győr, along the through road of Szigetköz coming from national highway M10, in ideal natural surroundings. Its alluvial soil is mostly suitable for plant production, its forests are situated in the Szigetköz side of the Mosoni-Danube. It was first mentioned in records in 1280 under the name Mercher, which is a word of Slav origin meaning a sword-maker, probably the first inhabitants pursued this activity. The Local Council was established in 1990. Its beautiful environment is free of industrial activities, which makes it ideal for tourism. Sights include: the nicely restored houses of the former ship-millers and river carriers, and a neo-Romanesque church built by counts Wenckheim at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Pension on the bank of the Danube is a successful tourism enterprise, as a result of which the purchase and restoration of the old houses has started. Mecsér is a popular station of river tours, too.
