The large village of 6,000 inhabitants is situated in the south-west of county Pest, on the bank of the branch of the Danube at Ráckeve, along national motorway No. 51. It has been populated since the Hungarian conquest; it was first mentioned in records in 1280. The relics of its local history are presented at the permanent exhibition in the Sándor Petőfi Community and Educational Centre. The poet, Sándor Petőfi's parents lived here for several years from 1864. The house often visited by Sándor Petőfi is the Petőfi Memorial Museum today. You can also find a permanent exhibition of works by Arany Bazsonyi and Sándor Vecsési, who was awarded the Munkácsy-prize. Another cultural value of the village is the exhibition of the glass works by Júlia Báthori. The village has several monument churches. The branch of the Danube at Soroksár offers a bath of high quality, which is suitable for all kinds of water sports. Accommodation is offered in private houses, in the boat house right on the bank of the Danube and at the HM Educational Centre. The inn called "Fogadó a hat testvérhez" and other restaurants await visitors with excellent gastronomic specialities. The village has a nursery school, a primary school, a music and arts school, and you can find a sports hall for those who are health-conscious and want to do sport. The sports hall is suitable for organizing international matches. The inhabitants have been dealing with wine and fruit growing for a long time, the wines of Dömsöd, such as the rizlingszilváni, the muscatel and the kékfrankos are still famous. The section of the Danube at Soroksár offers a fishing paradise for visitors, the sports facilities as well as the bank of the Danube provide active relaxation and recreation.
